Match Report
Bridport slumped to their worst defeat of the season, conceding five goals without reply in a game which was effectively over as a contest after 25 minutes writes Jon Smith.
The rout started two minutes into the game with Luke Mortimore blasting the ball home from the edge of the right hand side of the penalty box. The same player doubled the score ten minutes later when, having beaten the Bees offside trap, he found himself able to shoot home past Bees keeper Jordan Scadding who was out of his area, while putting enough pace on it so that defender Dan Baggs couldn’t reach it before the ball crossed the line. Sol Ayunga and James Cox were unable to claw a goal back with a header that flew over the bar and a shot which might have been more productive if he’d passed it, respectively. Either side of the twentieth minute, Okehampton were still comfortably in control. Charlie Harrod shot wildly over the Bees bar in the 24th minute, but in the next attack Jake Rowe increased Argyle”s lead when he picked up on a poor clearance before netting from six yards for 3-0.
If a sign was needed that this wasn’t going to be Bridport’s day regardless of what they did, when Ayunga chased down a bad back pass after 30 minutes, the keeper’s clearance bounced off of the strikers legs harmlessly to safety!
Perhaps surprisingly there were no substitutions by Bridport at half time, and both Captain Luke King and Ayunga were the closest to reducing to the deficit in the opening twenty minutes of the second half. It was at this point that the visitors brought on Daniel Koita who single handedly demolished any hope of a Bees comeback. With 66 minutes elapsed he pounced on a deflection off of a defender, before advancing on goal and smashing the ball past Scadding for 4-0. Four minutes later he scooped the ball over the bar after a 20 yard charge on goal, before unleashing a 30 yard run and shot thirteen minutes later. In what was turning into a one man show, Koita made it five nil, three minutes before time as he left two defenders in his wake on the right wing, before firing his second past a despairing Scadding in the home goal. It was a sign that it was definitely his day when, in the last minute of the game, he managed to evade three Bridport defenders who attempted to simultaneously tackle him!
The game ended with 101 minutes elapsed, but not before Kieran Daniels received a second yellow for dissent, after his first card was awarded for seemingly pretending to throw the ball, which never actually left his hands, at an opponent! Farcically, the game was then delayed for a further few minutes while the referee and his Assistant on the dug out touch line compared notes, seemingly to confirm who had been cautioned, although home supporters speculated that they were checking the Grand National placings and questioned the referees level of experience in a game that finished after 101 minutes !
