Match Report
Undoubtedly the real heroes of the day were the Bridport volunteers who worked manfully this morning to get the pitch playable writes Steve Shipcott.
Both teams may have wondered why they bothered at the start as they battled to overcome not only the ground but also the wind which, while not of storm proportions, was awkwardly directed and hardly conducive to free flowing play.
For this reason the first half was mainly played in midfield with only a couple of chances for each team which were solidly defended and led to a goalless first half.
It appeared that the second half (which took exactly one hour to complete) was going to be more of the same until in the sixty-second minute Sidmouth’s Lewis Jagger Cane picked up a through ball close to the half way line and ran unchallenged towards goal. Cane's shot cannoned off the post, straight into the path of the unfortunate and blameless Dan Baggs who was unable to stop the ball rebounding off his legs and into his own net.
From that point on Bridport had by far the majority of chances to level, with several attempts veering the wrong side of the posts. As the pressure built, Sidmouth players began to lose their cool somewhat and several yellow cards were issued, culminating in the sin-binning of O’Callaghan, the Sidmouth keeper, in the 94thminute for dissent.
Despite Sidmouth’s reduction to ten men and a further five minutes’ play, Bridport were still unable to equalise.
FINAL SCORE :- Bridport 0 Sidmouth Town 1
