Match Report
Bridport suffered their first defeat of the season, succumbing to a late penalty winner in their FA Vase clash with Hamble Club writes Jon Smith
The visitors were unfortunate not to be a goal up in the first minute when Clayd Roach was put through on goal, only for Bees’ keeper Jordan Scadding to push the ball away for a corner. In an end to end opening period, the officiating team were having the worst start of the three outfits, when what seemed to be an obvious push on the Bees Brad Rowe twenty yards out from the visitors goal, and an obvious double tap free kick by the Monks ‘keeper Newman, went unpunished.
Roach was clearly the big threat, forcing Scadding to produce a stupendous save from three yards with thirteen minutes elapsed, and it wasn’t until four minutes later that Riley Weedon, with a shot over the bar from range, truly troubled the visitors. In an even half, Hamble’s Bailey Honeysett and Harry Hamilton matched the Bees Luke King and Brad Rowe as they probed the opposition defences. Clearly this wasn’t enough for the Hampshire club bench as a tirade of abusive language at a volume that reached every corner of the ground, demonstrated their frustration just after the half hour! Samuel Fodfroy, Roach and Matthew Casey also tested the home goal prior to half time.
It was the same story after the break with Luke King snuffing out two attacks, and the increasingly over worked Scadding defying the visitors in the opening fifteen minutes. The Bees passed up their best chance of scoring when, after a goalmouth scramble, the ball trundled past the Hamble goal post after 62 minutes. The game was effectively decided in the following twelve minutes. With 67 minutes on the clock, in the midst of a another goalmouth scramble, the referee awarded a penalty to The Monks, an offence that couldn’t be discerned by spectators on various sides of the pitch which Roach, who else, tucked away with ease even though Bridport’s keeper went the right way. It was 2-0 in the 74th minute when Brandon Douglas and Roach raced through on a breakaway, before the former fed the latter for the decisive goal. In the third minute of added time Scadding prevented a further goal when he saved a penalty from substitute Sol Nwosu Mazi.
