Tough Battle Ends in Narrow Defeat for the Bees
Bridport FC Ladies suffered a rare defeat against a much-improved Street FC, who put in a strong defensive display to claim a 1-0 victory.
The match was moved to a 4G pitch in Yeovil, providing an unusual setting for us. The smaller playing surface, combined with net cables spanning the pitch, led to multiple drop-ball scenarios, disrupting the game’s flow and making for a stop-start encounter.
With the pressure on, we started brightly and created an early opportunity on goal, but Street defended resolutely throughout. The only goal of the game came in unfortunate circumstances—our goalkeeper was forced to clear under pressure, and Street managed to charge down the kick, resulting in a deflection that found the back of our net.
Chances were scarce for both sides, though Street struck the crossbar once, while we carved out a few opportunities that we couldn’t quite convert. Ultimately, the match was a fierce midfield battle, with both defensive lines standing firm to keep their teams in contention.
Despite pushing for an equaliser, we couldn’t find the breakthrough and left empty-handed.
Looking ahead, Street now face second-placed Cheddar on Wednesday—a crucial fixture in the title race. If both we and Cheddar win our remaining games, the title could be decided on goal difference, with Cheddar currently holding a narrow two-goal advantage.
Adding to the challenge, we recently had a three-point adjustment following an investigation into our match against AEK Boco, due to the opposition fielding ineligible players. Unfortunately, while the points were corrected, we were unable to reclaim the goals from that fixture, making our final game even more crucial. We will have a bit of a wait until 13th April to play this game however.
We regroup and refocus, knowing there is still everything to play for.
