Somerset County Women's League Match Report:

Date: 15th December 2024
Opponents: Wincanton Ladies
Result: 9-0 Win

After a pleasing victory over Cheddar Ladies two weeks ago and last week's game postponed due to the storm, we entered this match top of the league, eager to maintain our momentum.

Manager Lianne Dunk instructed the team to start fast and impose our game from the off. However, Wincanton Ladies had other ideas and looked determined to disrupt our rhythm. While we weren’t in immediate danger of conceding, it took us a while to break down Wincanton's solid midfield and defense. Our shots lacked the usual clinical edge we’ve come to expect, as the visiting goalkeeper made a string of impressive saves.

It was in the 17th minute when we broke the deadlock. League top scorer Aleeshea Rowland received the ball just outside the box, breezed past two defenders, and finished with composure. Five minutes later, Rowland struck again, this time capitalizing on a perfectly weighted pass from Clare Darby.

Despite our dominance, Wincanton held firm and kept the scoreline at 2-0 as the first half came to a close.

Half-Time: 2-0

In the dressing room, the focus was on being more clinical in front of goal and executing the basics with greater quality. it took us a little while for us to get back on track in the second half but when we did the flood gates opened. In the 59th minute, Rowland completed her hat-trick, scoring from a corner that the Wincanton goalkeeper couldn’t clear.

Barely a minute passed before Rowland added her fourth, with another assist from Darby. On 65 minutes, a well-placed ball from the right wing found Maisie Macdonald, who drove into the box and finished with precision past the keeper. Darby, who had been instrumental with her assists, added a goal to her tally shortly after, scoring from a Macdonald corner that Wincanton struggled to clear.

With the scoreline at 6-0, it was clear that Wincanton were tiring, and we capitalized on the momentum. On 75 minutes, Darby provided her third assist of the game, passing to Rowland for her fifth and final goal of the afternoon.

Not to be left out, Holly Perryment got in on the action, scoring from another Macdonald corner. The final goal of the day came in the 82nd minute when defender Cait Corbett launched a long ball upfield for Rowland, who completed her hat-trick with another composed finish.

Full-Time: 9-0 Win

Seven second-half goals demonstrated our fitness and depth, giving us the opportunity to rotate the bench and keep everyone involved.

Player of the Match:
Georgie Hughes put in a standout performance, controlling the midfield with composure and precision. Her passing was on point, setting the tone for the team, especially in the second half.

A comprehensive 9-0 win keeps us firmly at the top of the league and we have closed the goal difference to third placed Cheddar as we look forward to continuing our strong form in 2025
