Match Report
Bridport’s eight game unbeaten run ended with a first home defeat since the 22nd of October and saw the hosts finish the contest with nine men, writes Jon Smith. Meanwhile, visitors Bishop Lydeard were reduced to ten in an otherwise nondescript game which was expertly officiated by Man Of The Match, the referee Amith Gunarathna Maha Vidanage!
The visitors shocked the home following in the tenth minute when Callum Chivers finished a breakaway move after a concerted Bridport attack for one nil. Riley Weedon responded in the nineteenth minute with a shot from 18 yards that Bishops’ Toby Warner did well to save. James Cox, Weedon and Harley Brook all had attempts on goal either saved, or go close to providing an equaliser, before the busy Weedon forced Warner to tip a shot over the bar just after the half hour. The highlight of the remains of the half, which saw The Bees pepper the visitors goal to no effect, was a bicycle kick by skipper Darren Lock which, if it had found the target instead of flying narrowly wide, would have been a cert for any career highlights reel!
The second half continued in the same vein with Bishops’ Tai Bewes weak shot on yet another breakaway, being countered by Bridport’s Fred Parsons having an attempt headed clear by goalie Warner! On the hour mark it was Will Gape’s turn to demonstrate that it wasn’t going to be Bridport’s day when the ball ricocheted off of his shins in the visitors six yard box, only for it to fly wide. Bishops Lydeard’s penalty area was beginning to resemble The Alamo, with a torrent of shots being blocked or diverted. Having survived this phase, the visitors began looking at increasing their advantage. Chivers had a shot saved by a diving Scadding in the home goal and in the 76th minute substitute Adam Willis was teed up for the kill, only to blast the ball over the bar from twelve yards out. The drama however was far from over as Bishops Lydeard were reduced to ten men when Chivers was dealt a second yellow card for a terrible tackle in midfield. A man up and a goal adrift, The Bees bombard the visitors goal, but, in the final minute, when Bishops Lydeard smashed a clearance out to the right hand of the halfway line, a foul on Bees’ Sol Padmore rapidly developed into something more serious.
