Match Report: Newquay AFC 4 - 0 Bridport FC (Cup Match)

Report and Photos by Simon Robinson

Bridport FC traveled to Newquay for a highly anticipated cup clash, a rematch of last year’s dramatic encounter that saw the Bees triumph on penalties. This time, Bridport faced a formidable opponent in red-hot league form, boasting 11 wins from 14 games and an unbeaten record at home. Missing a couple of key players, Bridport approached the match confident but aware of the challenge ahead.

Newquay began on the front foot, forcing an early free kick and testing Bees’ goalkeeper Jordan Scadding within the opening minutes. The home side’s pressure paid off just six minutes in when a wind-assisted chip floated over Scadding’s fingertips to give them an early lead.

Bridport responded positively, creating several chances but failing to convert. James Cox had a shot blocked, Fred Parsons’ header was comfortably saved, and Noah House added to the tally of missed opportunities. The Bees enjoyed good spells of possession but lacked the decisive final ball to truly trouble the Newquay defense. Despite a sin-bin incident for Bridport, Newquay’s first-half threats were limited to a few half-chances and set pieces.

Half-Time: Newquay AFC 1 - 0 Bridport FC

The Bees came out with renewed energy after the break, pressing Newquay for the opening 10 minutes of the second half. However, the hosts soon found their rhythm, doubling their lead in the 58th minute with a long ball over the top that caught the Bridport defense off guard.

The match turned more physical as Bridport’s captain Luke King was forced off with painful rib injuries after a collision involving Newquay’s goalkeeper. Just a minute later, defensive lapses allowed Newquay to exploit space, leading to their third goal – a straightforward finish from close range.

Newquay sealed the result in the 83rd minute with a stunning strike from distance, rounding off a clinical display.

For the loyal Bees supporters who made the long journey, it was a tough result to swallow. However, Newquay’s hospitality after the game offered some solace, and Bridport can hold their heads high for their effort against a strong opponent. Congratulations to Newquay AFC on their victory and best of luck in the next round and for the remainder of their season.
