Match Report: Bridport FC Women vs Paulton Rovers Reserves

Final Score: Bridport FC Women 0–1 Paulton Rovers Reserves
Venue: St Mary’s Field
Date: First home match since late November

Bridport FC Women returned to St Mary’s Field for their first home fixture since the end of November, eager to get back onto the pitch after weeks of rain and flooding. With two solid performances behind them, the team looked to build on their strong defensive foundation and turn more of their attacking opportunities into goals.

A Midfield Battle From Start to Finish

The match unfolded as a tight, hard-fought midfield contest, with both sides proving to be evenly matched. Bridport enjoyed more possession throughout and created the higher number of chances, but the final cutting edge proved elusive. At times the team looked to overplay instead of taking early shots, allowing Paulton to recover and reorganise defensively.

Despite Bridport’s control of the ball, Paulton Rovers stood firm with a solid defensive shape that repeatedly halted promising moves.

The Decisive Moment

The only goal of the match came midway through the game. As Bridport attempted to clear their lines and push up the pitch, Paulton’s right winger capitalised on a loose ball and clipped a pass over the top. Their left-sided attacker ran onto it and finished the chance.

Video playback suggested the runner may have been offside, but it was tight—and in real time, a difficult call for the assistant referee. Aside from the goal, Paulton created one or two decent opportunities but rarely threatened in sustained spells.

Bridport Push but Can’t Break Through

Bridport continued to dominate possession, controlling tempo and territory, but the story of the afternoon remained the same: strong build-up, resilient Paulton defending, and frustration in the final third. The team walked away disappointed with the result despite the effort and commitment on display.

Looking Ahead

Bridport now shift their attention to a challenging away fixture in two weeks’ time, where they will face league leaders Portishead. The squad will be determined to take positives forward and give the table-toppers a tough contest on the road.

Manager Lianne Dunks’ Post-Match Thoughts

Speaking on social media after the game, manager Lianne Dunks reflected on the performance and the season so far:

“As we pass the midpoint of our season, we find ourselves engaged in highly competitive games. While we have shown commendable effort, we are currently falling short of our goals.
We have experienced several close matches against formidable opponents, and we are observing improvements in various aspects of our performance.
Moving forward, it is vital that we concentrate on enhancing the consistency of our player rotations, particularly given the challenges we face with player availability in key positions this season. Additionally, we must work on becoming more efficient in converting possession into scoring opportunities.
We genuinely appreciate your support and extend our gratitude to those who came out to cheer for the women yesterday.”
