Match Report
Pen Mill Control the Day
Bridport Ladies travelled to Johnson Park to face Pen Mill First on Sunday 9th November.
They were unable to overcome last season’s Division One champions, going down 5–1 due
to defensive mishaps, despite a bright start and early chances.
Bridport struggled to match the intensity and control of their opponents, who dominated
midfield and punished defensive lapses throughout the game.
Bridport fielded a strong side, with Aleeshea Rowlands making her second start since
returning from injury, providing a boost for the team at a key time.
The visitors began positively, creating two early chances within the first six minutes.
Rowlands’ shot went just wide, while Clare Darvy tested the keeper with a well-placed effort.
It quickly became clear that the midfield battle would define the match. Pen Mill consistently
won the ball and were able to accurately distribute it to wide players, while Bridport struggled
to retain possession and to use the ball efficiently when they did.
Pen Mill opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a composed finish. Bridport manager
Lianne Dunk urged the team to respond, but Pen Mill continued to control the game,
exploiting gaps in the Bridport defence.
A second goal before half-time widened the gap, making it difficult for Bridport to mount a
comeback.
At the interval, Dunk emphasised energy, belief, and communication, stressing the need to
improve service to the forwards, who had seen very little of the ball in the first half.
The second half began in light drizzle on a slightly heavy pitch. Just three minutes after the
restart, a defensive error allowed Pen Mill to extend their lead to 3–0. Two further goals on
63 and 71 minutes sealed the hosts’ victory.
Bridport continued to work hard despite the scoreline and were rewarded with an
89th-minute consolation from Laura Tattershall, showing the determination that had been
missing for much of the match.
Pen Mill demonstrated why they are reigning champions, with a well-deserved win. For
Bridport, the match offers valuable lessons in communication, decision-making, and
consistency, which the team will focus on as they regroup and prepare for upcoming fixtures.
